How much water is too much water?

This weekend I did a little tiny bit of gardening with my roommate Kate. We put some marigold and lettuce seeds in the ground in our back yard. With no garden tools to speak of we used our hands to clear all the wood chips and weeds out of our beds, till up the soil a bit, create holes, drop in seeds, and cover em up! Hopfully the deer won't eat all of our lettuce this summer. Actually, I won't be eating any of our lettuce, either. It should be coming up while I'm in Arakansas with the farmers. I have no qualms about that.
